Hiring people right out of
college? Yes, according to Niraj Shah, co-founder and CEO
of Wayfair.com," We typically only
hire people who are right out of school. They may not have specific skills, but
they have all the traits." Shah continues in his interview with Adam Bryant,
Corner Office, "You can sometimes find someone who is very skilled in a
specific area, but might not have some of the core values we look for…" Although
your character—your core values— do not always relate to how well you will
perform in a job it's often why you will be hired. Based on my experience, companies
that understand the organization's culture and values hire for character over
skills. This is good news for college graduates.
Here are three ways your
resumé can showcase your
character and core values to employers.
- Instead of stating personal characteristics outright, demonstrate those characteristics by emphasizing results. It's the difference between an abstract statement such as possess strong communication skills and having a resumé that is well-written, professional and appropriately creative.
- Job titles, responsibilities and accomplishments need to be believable. Boasting is acceptable —this is not the time to be modest. But you must not claim accomplishments that are inconsistent with your experience. Employers will question your ethics and you won't get the interview.
- Leverage what you have to offer and don’t try to sell yourself as something you are not.
Integrating you qualities will make a resumé more personal, reader-friendly
and allow the reader to visualize you in the position.
