The key to succeeding in most careers is simple: be
quantitatively and qualitatively better at your job than anybody else.
When a client graduated college, he landed his first job at
a talent management agency and film production company— in the mail room. (His parents
were not happy with me.) Two weeks later he moved to reading scripts and after
that into a position where he helped cultivate a slate of feature film projects.
Within eight short years he moved up to his current position as senior vice
president of production for the agency’s film division responsible for all
aspects of creative, development and production.
A high profile job in a high profile
company. How did he do it? How can you do it?
▪ Be your own competition; work as hard as you can at everything you do.
▪ As my mother said, “Dress the part.” Dress slightly
nicer than the job requires.
▪ Take risks; ask for special projects.
▪ Take responsibility for your own growth.
▪ Make certain the people you work with know who you are and
what you can do.
▪ Be reliable.
